Micah Parsons has heard the feedback from those who feel like he eased up as the season wore on last year, but his response to the criticism may come as a surprise. That leads off this edition of News and Notes, along with where Parsons- and a few of his Cowboys teammates- rank in the league’s top 100 players, according to one analyst.

Elsewhere, we have a look at the dollars and cents for the two newest Cowboys, we tell you why one Dallas rookie should have the entire fanbase rooting hard for him, and we share the shocking numbers behind what America’s most famous cheerleaders say they earn for doing their insanely competitive and physically punishing job. We’re digging into why Trevon Diggs has even more to prove in 2024, we’re ranking the best receivers to ever wear the star, we’re eyeing the best college cornerbacks for next spring’s draft, and we’re telling you why Mike McCarthy should dust off the screen play more often this fall. All that, plus why talk of a QB salary cap won’t save the Cowboys in their talks with Dak Prescott, and a new flag football tournament is coming to Canton.

Some observers felt his performance tailed off as the season came to a close last year, but Parsons merely sees the criticism as a challenge. “When people want things, you have to answer the call. It is not a negative thing,” he said. “It is the most positive thing people can say to me because it pushes me and challenges me to be better.” He’s been hosting youth football camps all across Texas and at Penn State University, his alma mater, to raise money for his newly-created Lion’s Heart Foundation to benefit young people in his hometown.

Cowboys' Trevon Diggs once again will have to prove NFL value in 2024 :: Cowboys Wire

Diggs is a polarizing talent for his all-or-nothing gambling in the secondary, but now coming off an ACL tear, he’ll have to remind the NFL exactly who he is and what he brings to the table. He has just four total interceptions since his breakout 11-interception season in 2021 and is now playing under a new defensive coordinator in Mike Zimmer, in the first year of an enormous five-year extension he signed last offseason.

There’s no dearth of talent at the position currently, but corners are always in demand in the NFL. There’s a loaded class coming in 2025, with Michigan’s Will Johnson, Notre Dame’s Benjamin Morrison, Ohio State’s Denzel Burke, Kentucky’s Maxwell Hairston, and Colorado’s Travis Hunter sure to be hot prospects come April.

The entire coaching staff is on the hot seat, and the starting quarterback is in a contract year. That’s a lot of pressure to put on a left tackle. But the Cowboys’ larger hopes as a team can’t be realized without a solid debut from the rookie who’s now charged with protecting Prescott’s blind side… who’s also just learning the position. Tyler Guyton made only 14 starts at tackle in college.

Unlocking screen is how Cowboys' 2024 offense kicks the doors down :: Cowboys Wire

The Cowboys were very good at the screen in 2023. But for some reason, they didn’t run it very often. The play is a great way to buy time for a new, inexperienced, or otherwise struggling offensive line… so a change in that policy in 2024 could benefit the offense greatly.

QB cap might help Cowboys temporarily but it’s still pure fantasy :: Cowboys Wire

League owners are reportedly kicking around the idea of a QB salary cap- separate from the other positions- to help curb the astronomical salaries for passers. It sure would be helpful for the Cowboys now in their current situation with Dak Prescott, whereby they stand to owe him 22% or more of the current cap… or risk losing him. But the CBA simply does not allow such a move, and teams who have already paid their QBs would likely never support it anyway.

In the rich history of Cowboys wide receivers, four of the top five share the same jersey. Bob Hayes, the only man to win both a Super Bowl ring and an Olympic gold medal, is an awfully good place to start. But then there’s the 88 Club: Lamb, Drew Pearson, Dez Bryant, and Michael Irvin, in that order.

Among the revelations of the Netflix series is how nearly every squad member has to hold down a second job. One DCC alumna said her earnings equal that of a substitute teacher or a “Chick-fil-A worker that works full-time.” ESPN estimates the average NFL cheerleader to make about $22,500 per year, just under what an NFL mascot typically brings in… and less than half of what the water boys earn. And the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are among the league’s highest-paid squads.
