Yemen's Houthi rebels detain 11 UN staffers as well as aid workers in sudden crackdown
Eleven Yemeni employees of United Nations agencies have been detained by Yemen's Houthi rebels under unclear circ*mstances, authorities said Friday, as the rebels face increasing financial pressure and airstrikes from a U.S.-led coalition. Others working for aid groups also have been taken.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric in New York acknowledged 11 UN staffers had been taken.
"We are very concerned about these developments, and we're actively seeking clarification from the Houthi de facto authorities regarding the circ*mstances of these detentions and most importantly, to ensure the immediate access to those UN personnel," he told journalists.
"So I can further tell you that we're pursuing all available channels to secure the safe and unconditional release of all of them as rapidly as possible."
Of the 11, the UN said nine are men and two are women. Six worked for the UN's human rights agency, while one apiece worked for its special envoy's office, its development arm, UNICEF, the World Food Program and UNESCO.

IDF says drone launched from Lebanon Friday afternoon fell in open area after failed interception attempt
The Israeli army has said a drone launched from Lebanon that entered Israel Friday afternoon fell in an open area near the Jezreel Valley deep in Israel, after a failed interception attempt. A different drone launched from Lebanon fell in an open area in the Western Galilee. The army's statement added that fighter jets attacked Hezbollah targets in Lebanon's south throughout Friday.

White House awaiting official Hamas response to cease-fire proposal
The White House said on Friday it was still awaiting an official response by Hamas to the latest cease-fire proposal for the Gaza conflict.
Spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron would discuss the issue during a meeting on Saturday.

IDF says a Hamas' security apparatus head killed in strike near Rafah
The Israeli army says its forces on Thursday killed one of the heads of Hamas' security apparatus near Rafah. The army's statement said it is also examining the possibility a different Hamas senior official, who served as mayor of north Nuseirat, was killed in the same strike.
